Still have Windows Explorer randomly closing in new XP Home installation on
Dell comp. Not an uncommon fault I believe, especially with some Dell
machines.

Errors suggest problem with ntdll.dll

Current version is 5.1.2600.1217

Version 5.1.2600.1106 is one of only two files in folder I386 System32 (I
presume the original from installation?)

Assuming I can replace the new one with the old one (due to the protection
used on system files) will this do any good / harm??

Is the old version susceptible to some vulnerability and has been replaced
by a Windows Update patch??

Any expert advice on what to do / how to do it would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Do you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed? If you do,
right click on a .jpg file, choose Properties, click the Photoshop
Image tab and uncheck the "Generate Thumbnails" button. I had the
same problem you're having and that's what worked for me.
