ntbackup.exe - can't manually change .bks file

ntbackup.exe is scheduled to run daily to back up a set of files on my
XP Pro machine. It works fine, but if I want to add anything to what
is backed up then I have to run through the whole wizard thing and
remember what it is that I backed up before etc., which I find
annoying. So, looking at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 237310, I
see that I should just be able to edit the appropriate .bks file in my
Documents and settings\...\NTBackup\datafile directory. However, if I
do, the task falls over as soon as it starts and writes to the log
"The saved selection file "NT\NTBackup\data\[myfile].bks" cannot be
found.". Infact, just to test, I opened the file in notepad, made no
changes, but saved the file, and it still didn't work! I've tried
stuff like checking the file permissions and re-setting the schedulers
password, but without success. Any ideas or should I just pay for a
decent backup utility.
