Firstly, please excuse the cross posting; I have to solve this problem by tomorrow morning which is only 10 hours away.
I have a client with an NT4 / Back office file & print server and a small workgroup of 8 Win98 and XP workstations. He called me in today because the network had ground to a halt for no apparent reason ;-)
I found 2 PCs with Welchia which were causing gigabytes or spurious (ICMP) traffic - infected via a laptop which had been connected by modem while on the road. Removed these and then discovered that *none* of his machines had *ever* visited windows update (and the majority had no anti-virus).
So I removed the Welchia worm using the MS script and had all his machines visit windows update. This worked well for all the machines except the NT server. It downloaded all available updates except for a batch which needed to be downloaded separately. So far so good.
I then returned to install this 'stand alone' roll-up package, told the client that he would have to restart the server after it was installed but got a phone call to tell me that he now faces a bsod at every boot.
I have little experience in supporting NT4, though I am MCSA in 2000.
Obviously, one of the critical updates needs removing but I cannot see how to accomplish this. So far as I can tell NT4 does not have a 'safe mode' start-up option. We have tried Last Known Good, Original Configuration and Default Configuration but have had no success.
I am no longer at the client's office and cannot see what the stop error actually is. He does not have ERD disks and his backups are only of his D (data) drive!
He cannot find his NT installation CD ( though he does have his BO disk - might this include NT server?).
Any suggestions ...
Many thanks
John
