I have a Windows NT4 domain controller that is also running an SQL2000
application. I'd like to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 2000 Member
Server (I am introducing a new Windows 2003 domain controller separately).
Is this possible?

It seems to me after I run the upgrade if I just skip the active directory
wizard, all will be fine. Am I setting myself up for a miserable weekend?
Thanks for your thoughts...

Hi Trevor. I've never done this specifically but that
does sound troublesome. I would think that you're better
off upgrading the server to 2k WITH the domain and AD
setup then running DCPROMO afterwards and demoting to a
member server. I'm not sure but you may be able to demote
to member server in NT (can't remember) before the
upgrade. I would think that even more preferable, but I'm
not sure you can (memory sux right now :(

Either way I wouldn't think to just skip the AD install as
that could be a huge can of worms. You'd probably want to
install the 2003 server (pdc) before you demote the 2k pdc
as you should be able to migrate the domain info from it
and save the headache of rebuilding the domain on 2003 (if
that is your intention). Either way good luck.
