Hello,

Option 1--> Joining a Workstation or Member Server to a Domain
=======
The member server or workstation must be configured correctly so that it
has full network connectivity and name resolution.

1. Log on to the workstation or member server with an account that has
local Administrative privileges.

2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

3. On the Network Identification tab, click Properties.

4. Click Domain, and then type the domain name (in this example,
"Microsoft" (without the quotation marks)).

5. Click OK. You are then prompted for the user name and password for an
account that has rights to join the domain.

NOTE: You can also use the Network ID button, which starts the Network
Identification Wizard. You can then create the machine account in the
domain, as well as creating a local user account on the computer.

Things to do before joining them to win2k domain --> change dns settings,
so that it is pointing to the win2k dns server.

Option 2
======
You can use netdom to join them to the win2k domain:

** make sure "restrictanonymous is not set to "2" on the win2k DCs, this
will prevent downlevel clients from joining the domain.

Thank You.

Hi Bill,

I just noticed that you stated that the domain was in native mode. In
native mode, you can not have any nt4.0 machines:

Windows 2000 native --> Supported domain controllers: Windows 2000, Windows
Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 ---> Supported domain controllers: Windows Server 2003

Hi Bill,

NT 4.0 workstations can participate in a Native 2000 domain. Just make sure
that you configure the workstations IP settings so that;

1. the first DNS server listed is that of a DNS server in the 2000 domain.
2. If using WINS do same as above
3. check that your dns suffix matches the domain you are joining. e.g. if
the fqdn of the 2000 domain is mydomain.local then your dns suffix should be
the same.

Steve

I know that you cannot have any NT domain controllers.
This is just a workstation.

We have tried the DSClient, added the dns suffix, and it
still will not join. Anything else?

Hi Bill,

Yes, if this is a workstation it should be able to join the domain.

What error are you getting?

Did you make sure restrictanonymous was not set to "2"?

Diana.
