Hi,

Our backup server have gone south on me and so I had to use an external USB
hard drive to back up one of the critical file server. The total back up is
less than 260 g of data and I am using a 500 g external hard drive to back
up data until I can get the backup server to working order.

On of the question I have is about running Differential back up job. The
two type of back up jobs I apply in my network is Full backup at the end of
the week and Differential backup Monday thru Thursday on a weekly baasis.

When I try to set up Differential backup using NTBack native backup
software, I am prompted (as I recall) to select "if I want to update the
existing backup file or create a new backup file (meaning it will overwrite
exiting file". My selection was to update the existing backup file. The
differential file just seems to increase in size thru out the week. Maybe I
am just over thinking but is the differential backup working properly or
backing the files up twice?

Thanks,
Helen

From ntbackup help:
=====================
A backup that copies files created or changed since the last normal or
incremental backup. It does not mark files as having been backed up
(in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared).
=====================

Since you selected "append", all new/modified data files get appended
to the existing backup file. If you were to create a new backup file
each day then each of these new backup files would contain the
new/modified data files from the preceding day.

You might want to have a look at a script I wrote on my web site - it
uses the built in backup (written for 2003 server, but SHOULD work under
2000 (let me know if you have problems)). The script saves backup files
based on the date and time - you just define the backup sets.

You would then schedule the script using the Task Scheduler (it's been
working quite well for me on my client's servers).
