Hello,

In NT Backup, is it possible to clear the tape catalog database? Also, when
I delete a tape catalog, I cannot seem to re-catalog that tape. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scallica

Hello Scallica,

You ask:
In NT Backup, is it possible to clear the tape catalog database?
Also, when I delete a tape catalog, I cannot seem to re-catalog that tape.
Any ideas?

I will try to answer this but I am not absolutely clear about the question
because there is an RSM database also.
The RSM database is located in the \winnt\system32\ntmsdata folder. There
are two files in this folder that can be renamed after you stop the RSM
service.
After you stop the RSM service and rename the files ntmsdata and
ntmsdata.bak, you can restart RSM and the service will no longer know about
previously used tapes used on the system. At this point you can insert a
previously used tape and catalog the tape in NTBackup.

The other catalog you are referring to is located in the users profile that
previously used the tape. This presents a problem in Windows 2000 when you
have multiple users performing tape backups unless you copy this data to
all NTBackup users. This issue is resolved in Windows 2003 Server.

Maybe this ultimately answers your question Scallica.

Joe,

Thanks for the reply! How would I clear the catalog history that resides in
the users profile?
