I am running Windows XP and use a 56K dialup modem to
access my ISP (ATT.net). Occassionally after I hook up to
the internet, I get a MS System Error Box that
says: "System shutting down. Please save all unsaved
work. This shutdown is initiated by NT Authority /
system."
AND, my computer shuts down. Since I'm not running
Windows NT, I assume that my ISP is! Is this an error
problem on the ISP end, OR, am I having some sort of
telephone line problem? Note the problem also show up
when I access JUNO. Also note that I experience the same
problem on my laptop (also running Windows XP).
When I take my laptop over to my neighbors house and use
his cable modem connection, there is no problem!
Any help would be appreciated.

You have been infected with the W32/Lovsan worm,
also refered to as the msblast worm, or RPC worm:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Disconnect the network cable from the infected machine
untill you have completed disinfection.

Get a firewall up immediately.

Then download and install the patch from here:
( be sure to get the correct one. )

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980

The following page contains a link to a standalone removal
tool which you can download and run:
(Read the notes for XP users re. System Restore.)

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100547.htm

Also, you may want to visit windowsupdate from time to time and
pick up the latest Critical updates. These are often released to plug
any security hole before any malicious code is in the wild which
exploits that hole. This security hole was plugged around a month ago.

It may be good to warn your neighbors about the virus, since you connect
your portable to their LANs...
