NSW 2002 to 2004: worth it??

I do a lot on my notebook, and use online
backups, etc., but nevertheless would suffer
greatly if malware penetrated. And I very much
like the overall system maintenance provided by
NSWPRO2002. However, my latest subscription is
running out, so it's decision time.

NSWPRO 2004 will cost me about $60 more than a
simple re-subscription.

Given that I'm a happy user of 2002, is it worth
the cost to upgrade to 2004? Is there any reason
NOT to switch to 2004?

Yeah. More than one. From 2003 onward, Symantec has decided to discontinue
some of its NU components. In addition I believe the NAV 2003 product has
much more drag on a system than does the 2002 product. NAV 2004 promises to
be even more resource intensive with adding scanning capabilities for
spyware, hack tools, dialers, joke programs, on and on......... Oh, and
Auto-protect now detects and repairs compressed files (2000 and XP)
downloaded from the internet. Wow.....

Stick with what you got.

The only portion to even consider upgrading would be the NAV component,
which is far cheaper. It will integrate fine with NSW2002. Other than
that, not much new in NSW since really 2001.

Yet I seem to get quite a lot of updates to download on my SystemWorks, and
they include Security updates as well as virus prot updates.

So you recommend update my Firewall sub and buy a NAV 2004?

Most of the updates are minor fixes, and there's not much "new" IMO in later
versions of the NSW components.

I would certianly upgrade NAV, but as for the firewall, that's your call.
If you can get a package deal (I've seen some at staples, and similar
places, then go ahead. You might also consider one of the free personal
firewalls available. I use ZoneAlarm personally.

Had that recommended by someone else last night, as it happens.

OK, thanks for that.

I think I'll just get the Internet Security package next time,
instead of SystemWorks and Firewall. All I really need
is the Antivirus and Firewall, which are both included
in addition to some new web features that seem useful.

But it isn't really effective...
Don't just believe in marketing.

I agree. Norton (with McAfee running a close second) thrives on
intense and often bullshit filled marketing techniques.

*If* you're going to buy a new version, better consider buying another
av software. To understand why, just read my posting below
([email protected]) as an answer to (e-mail address removed).

Useful? Which new components should be so useful that this software is
worth the money you spend for it?

That's the problem. The main ambition is to sell as much as possible
instead of good product quality or convincing customer service.

Fortunately, that isn't the case for some AV companies.
