Nslookup result

I have a 2000 forest with several child domains, one
tree. Dns is AD integrated. When ever you run nslookup
<IP address> for a child domain dc/dns server from the
root, it comes back with "can't find <IP>:non-existent
domain. Any insight on this.

This sounds like the error nslookup gives when it cannot find the PTR record
for the DNS address you are using. It has nothing to do with being able to
resolve a child domain from the parent. For that you need a child delegation
in the parent zone. Read:255248 - HOW TO Create a Child Domain in Active
Directory and Delegate the DNS Namespace to the Child Domain

NSLOOKUP is trying to find the PTR record for the DNS server. You can ignore this if you wish. It does not cause any problems. The other option would be to
configure reverse lookup zones and add the PTR records for your DNS servers.

Thank you. I get the nslookup result when I perform this
step in the root but not in child domains. I do have ptr
records in those child domains as well so I really don't
understand why that would error. Also, no replication
problem either throughout the forest.

Hi all,

I`ve exactly the same problems. Checked my config again and again but
everything seems to be correct.
Nslookup from a child domain is fine (on ip and netbios/dns). The problem is
from parent to child domain. Neither ip- nor netbios/dns-query gets a reply.
Michael: What do you mean with "configure reverse lookup zones and add the
PTR records for your DNS servers"?
Do I have to create it on the parent domain? I already have a reverse zone
on the child domain with entries of all servers and workstations.
Greetings from germany!

Thank you for taking the time.

Did you put the child delegation in the parent zone from this KB 255248 -

Hi Kevin,

yes. I did it as described in this article.
Hi Jens,
Which problem are you having?
Cannot resolve child domain from the parent.
or
This nslookup error?
*** [192.168.0.2] can't find 192.168.2.0: Non-existent domain
This can be ignored or you can configure a reverse lookup zone and PTR
records for your DNS servers' addresses.

Hi Kevin,

sorry for the delay in replying.
I get the message "non existing domain".
If it´s just a disfigurement and I can ignore it then it´s ok.
For my understanding: The child domain can resolve the dns server from
parent domain by using the netbios name. The same should be possible vice
versa. But I get the same error message there?!

Hi Jens,
For the Child to resolve the parent domain by the NetBIOS or Hostname add
the parent domain to the DNS search order on the Child machines, then you
can either put a parent zone on the child DNS or make the parent DNS the
only forwarder on the Forwarders tab of the Child DNS.
