.npr files, is this a microsoft thing

I am doing back up files of my hard drive. I discovered a folder titled
"Data" and it had a couple gigabytes of files which were a lengthy number
with the file extension ".npr".

Is this something that is part of XP, or is it from another application, and
is it safe to delete them. A referral to a web page would be appreciated.

npr files are not from WinXP, see:
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=npr

This should allow you to determine whether or not they are worth keeping.
