XP Pro desktop, DUN.

My wife's computer is used solely for reading text files and limited
internet browsing.

Nothing has been installed for weeks on it, boot up and XP loads every
few days, no issues.

Starting yesterday, on bootup, offline, in initial screen, see the
message
"CMOS checksum error-defaults loaded"

Key F1 to continue.

F1 does load XP normally.

When I saw the message, looked into BIOS, the time was correct, saw
nothing unusual, maybe missed something.

Now, it is necessary to hit F1 each time to boot up.

If the battery was going bad, if that was the cause of the error message,
the time would be off?

How to fix so it again loads without F1?

One would think the time would be off too, but that battery is not expensive, I would replace it
first.

It really depends on the CMOS / BIOS chip. Open the computer and look
for the coin cell battery. Then, buy a replacement one.
