Now I have two WinXP boots

Hi,

There doesn't appear to be a software compliment to this newsgroup (if
there is, please let me know!).

I have been receiving a combination of BSOD and bootup Windows error
message regarding a device driver/machine check error message all of a
sudden. Last night, I could not boot up my PC. I had the option of
safe mode, etc... and kept trying all of the choices, including
restoring from the last known working setup. Windows/DOS told me that
pci.sys was corrupt and told me to restore windows using the "r"
option to repair it and to press r at the first screen I see. So I
did so. Windows copied various drivers and .DLL files (if Windows is
"smart" enough to know what file was corrupt or missing, one would
think it would know what file to replace from the Windows CD, no?).

What ended up happening after that (I think I screwed up and left the
CD in too long) is that Windows reinstalled another version/boot-up of
Windows XP!! So now, when I boot up my PC it is like I have two
operating systems (i.e., dual boot)! I now have a Windows folder and
a Windows.0 folder!

Is there a way to get rid of this new 2nd boot and folder?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then read similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Home Edition" /fastdetect

Hi Carey,
Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Not possible to edit an entry. "Check All Boot Paths" does just that.
It told me the appeared in order.
Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then read similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Home Edition" /fastdetect

I'm scared! :-) I assume the first entry is the first choice when
booting up?

Thanks!

I think your problems are beyond the boot file. However, why don't you post
a copy of your boot.ini here so someone can analyze it.

Here it is. I switched the order (msconfig) so that the first option
is the one I want to boot up with. Can I deleted the 2nd line? How
do I rem out a line (use the REM statement?)?. I just searched my
computer and the only file similar to boot.ini is
c:\windows\pss\boot.ini.backup. I'd like to back up boot.ini just in
case.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Thanks!

Easiest way to back up is just to copy the file to your desktop temporarily,
or make a new folder for it on the C:\ drive. You can delete the second
item. Use system properties (windows key/pause) : advanced ; startup ;
edit to edit your file, just to make sure you are editing the one the
system is using.

At a later date I would make the recycle bin large enough to hold the
windows.0 folder and send it there, so you can restore it if necessary. Do
you also have a documents and settings.0 folder or did it integrate the
changes into the existing one?

Hi John,

I also have an "All Users.WINDOWS.0" folder and a "Default
User.WINDOWS.0" folder
