Is there any other way to wipe out these phantom servers
other than demote, metadata cleanup and re-promote?

Brian

If you have servers that are still 'remembered' by AD but no longer
physically exist then a metadata cleanup is the only option to get rid of
them.

I had been under the impression that I only had to go into AD Users and
Computers and delete the entry. None of the machines I am talking about are
(or have ever been) a DC. Does this produce a problem if I do that??

How do I (using 5.5) do a metadata cleanup?

If none of the servers was a DC then you don't have a problem. Just delete
the computer account from ADU&C.

Both of my Deleted Server entries only show up when I
launch replmon.exe to check replication. I am unable to
see them in the metadata cleanup procedure.

What happened to give me two of these entries, is I
demoted the DC that the entries are remenants of, went
into NTDSUTIL.EXE to cleanup the metadata, but the
demotion had already cleaned it up.

I re-promoted the DC and now I have 2 of these deleted
server entries.

Last night I happened across a microsoft document
pertaining to these entries in Exchange Server and it said
they would be removed automatically in two weeks if left
alone.

Is this true? Replication is occurring like normal. Is
there a problem with leaving them in the AD?

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks, folks. That was what I suspected.

That is correct if the server are not DC then they will have no metadata to
cleanup. For future reference the article is
