If you are a computer savvy person w/no patience...log off now! If you are
willing to help...post! I have a computer Inspiron 531 w/Microsoft Office
(Business) VISTA; trying to learn, but all on my own. Sync? Is that
something that would allow me to enter a 'contact' and have it appear in all
3 email programs or will I have to type them in individually into each?
$1200 is a 'big' investment for me, on a 'set' income. Tired of getting
'into' something ONLY to find it is a 'sales pitch'. I should NOT have to
'buy' additional programs to make VISTA run...that is something that
Microsoft should provide somehow! I'm sure all these 'programs' you 'need to
buy' are Microsoft related. Bill Gates doesn't understand that NOT everybody
is as 'brilliant' as he...biggest mistake though was 'unleashing' VISTA
without more 'kinks' worked out...but $$$ is $$$ and $$$ is "His GOD" - NOT
mine!

Seeing as you don't have any money, get a grant or a student loan to go to
school and learn about computers so you actually have a clue as to what the
hell you're talking about.

Different email programs have contact modules of their own. I am afraid you
have to update each program yourself, but of course there are import and
export functionality in such programs to help you.

Import, export, or change the format for contacts:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/65fbffa9-0ba5-45d8-a60f-ded4e86f01de1033.mspx

Depending on what program you would like to import to/export from, search
the programs Help & Support, or visit it's support pages on the web. I do
not know what programs you intend to use, but here are two popular ones:

Outlook help:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/FX100647191033.aspx
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/FX100647201033.aspx
Thunderbird help:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/

I should NOT have to 'buy' additional programs to make VISTA
run...that is something that Microsoft should provide somehow!
<snip>

Windows is an operating system that will "run" perfectly well out of the
box. Although it includes a lot of media viewing and editing components,
simple word processing software and so on, it is not an office suite,
developer environement or so. You will have to obtain these programs in
addition to the OS, but many can be downloaded for free. Below are just a
few examples.

Mozilla software:

OpenOffice suite:

Visual Studio Express developer software:

Thanks...I have 're-typed' all of them into each program. I attempted to
find the Import/Export - but was a little 'too involved' for me to try @ this
moment. I have 'found them in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and in
"IncrediMail"; it's not as important to me, just thought it would be 'time
saving'. Thanks for your 'honesty' and especially for your 'politeness'.
Unfortunately, I have found that 'some' people who 'post' are rude as they
'expect' everybody to NOT be a novice. But all of us are (at some point in
our lives).

Dear Rachel,

It is 'so refreshing' to find someone who has NEVER been a 'novice'. If I
get a 'grant' or a 'student loan' it will be to take 'art' NOT computer. If
I don't know 'what the HELL I'm doing...it is because I chose NOT to 'stand
in Hell' ... What's YOUR problem? Being 'a rude smartA**' has never gotten
people far in life and I will tell you the same thing I told the LAST person
whose 'comment' was unwarranted...don't like MY response to a 'short, curt
remark' REPORT ME! I have this program on my computer to try to find 'help'.
You aren't willing to make suggestions kindly...don't open my email up! You
have my Display Name...write it down so you can 'remember' it!

God Bless!

Sorry to say, the tone can become a bit harsh on the Usenet (newsgroups). I
hope it does not scare you away, as these groups can be a great source of
help.

One of the advantages with Linux is that everything you'll routinely need
is included 'out of the box'. Many other applications are freely available
with a simple click on the package installer.

Computers are an "ART"

Oh, horseshit. They're machines, and simple ones at that.
fry your computer whilst downloading apps.

Oh, ha ha. Fry your computer while downloading... Like,
maybe if lightening hits the phone line while you're dialed up to
AOL?

:sarc:Though Rachel's reply was curt ,she's not entirely wrong. There is
so much to learn as a "novice" it would serve you well to have a more
hands on approach than a forum. Trial and error just doesn't work well
when you don't have any idea of what you're doing.Computers are an "ART"
FYI, and incredibly complex. Without any training you are sure to
destroy your investment.( AKA, fry your computer whilst downloading
apps. like ,"incredimail"?!, )And, to begin with Vista as your OS? ...If
you are just learning the term sync, start simple...Vista is still
experiencing the need for major tweaks which you'd never understand at
this point and shouldn't be expected to. You have to start somewhere
yes, but you don't attend high school at 6 yrs old. Give yourself a
break. I agree forums are great and people should be kind but don't
waste your own time.I mean, you were given basic instruction in answer
to your question and you didn't get it. Get someone to teach you, read
....If you don't want to learn ,don't. Up to you...PS , Good luck!

I thought the tone of the OP came off as a bit begging-to-be-flamed.
I'm not surprised that the exchange has resulted in unnecessary
postings, including this one.

Hats off to Charlie42 for keeping it real.

I'm not familiar with the latest version of Office to hazard a guess
how "Sync" is integrated into that program. You might have better luck
getting some help asking in one of the groups dedicated to Office. The
principle one is:

microsoft.public.office

As far as rudeness you experienced, sadly some here are overly zealous
and defensive of Microsoft. We call such odd creatures 'fanboys' since
they for reasons not yet known to modern science have undying devotion
to Microsoft and often will respond like attack dogs if you don't
bring your prayer rug and worship Microsoft like they do. It's just a
game for them so don't take it personally. My game is to make such
losers look like the idiots they are. Since they do most of the work,
its rather easy.

My goodness, aren't you nice.

Hi

We have all be begineers and have asked for help before, most and if not all
email programs include import/export functions, I am a bit confused why you
need to use multiple email clients personally I would choose one and stick
to that, with Outlook and IncredMail you can have multiple accounts with
different settings.

The post is about Vista not a second rate minor system.which a novice
would soon give up on.
Linux is not a second rate minor system. Actually it is far more
efficient system that is programmed better and runs much better. That
said today it is not supported nearly as well as a Windows system so a
novice would be better off with Windows. That is why so many endure
with the antivirus and security issues and have to reboot their machine
all of the time.

Sure there are some Linux programs (gThumb) that do not behave that well
and sometimes you need a fresh reboot to use them but when I am running
Windows I have to reboot 10 times more frequently.

Still while the novice should run Windows because of the current
situation he can prepare for Linux for the future by using some open
source programs. The big 2 are Firefox, Thunderbird, and Open Office.
Open Office can do everything that MS Office can do for the basic user
and does it more efficiently. And Firefox and Thunderbird is a no
brainer over Internet Explorer and Outlook.

Soon, but still a ways off, the hardware mfg will not longer be able to
resist the growing Linux market.
