frequently all the printers dissappear and the applications can't print. We need to power down the workstation with the problem and power it back up. The printers reappear. We have w2k and novell printer software. Can we do everything with w2k that novell offers (i.e. can we get rid of Novell)?

Well, for one, would you please actually tell us your environment & software
versions, your question was very very general.
What exact netware version are you using? what exact nwclient version are
you using? what exact sp level of w2k are you using?
For printing, are you using queue based or ndps? Running mixed ip/ipx or
pureip?

I know there have been issues in the past after a w2k service pack that ndps
modules on the local workstation were broken, requiring printspooler to be
restarted manually (you shouldnt have to reboot your workstation just to do
that btw....). This was fixed with whatever latest nwclient or ndps client
files were out, you can get that sort of stuff from
http://download.novell.com & http://support.novell.com/filefinder.

You can also get a slew of information from news://support-forums.novell.com
& if you want to distribute the updated client & client files with minimal
effort check out http://www.appdeploy.com/packages/detail.asp?id=108

Hi Jeff,

it sounds the workstation's Print Spooler service has failed.
Restarting that service instead of the entire OS should make the printers
appear again.

Often in the past that sort of behaviour has been linked to bad printer
drivers and/or corrupt/damaged fonts on the workstation (or a corrupt
embedded font in a document), nothing really to do with NetWare.
