For some reason, I am no longer receiving email notifications of replies. Is
there a newsgroup problem or have I messed up one of my settings?

I suggest using a proper news reader sch as Outlook Express.

In Outlook Express go to Tools | Accounts | Add (or New) | News.
Set up an account for this news server:

msnews.microsoft.com

The server is free and does not require you to logon. This news server
carries over 2200 newsgroups related to Microsoft products and keeps
messages at least 30 days.

Well, whatever! I reset my profile after I posted this last message and I
got an email about your replies. Whatever the problem was, it's working now.
I may try Outlook Express, but I don't even have it activated on my PC. Just
one more thing to worry about. I predominantly use AOL client for my email,
but also have other web based emails. Doesn't Outlook Express have its own
vulnerabilities?

Hi

Maybe to also use a proper NG server (MS) with working news feed......

There seems to be an issue at the server end--I'm seeing about a weeks worth
of messages in this group that I had not seen before, from the NNTP
perspective. It's possible that the notifications are likewise delayed.

The NNTP side is working fine--the problem seems to be the synch with the
HTML side where the bulk of the posting is done.

Everthing seems normal now. At lease for me. I understand that it was not too
long ago that these newgroups could not even by accessed from a web viewer.
The change seems to be a wise choice if the bulk of posting come from that
side. The general public needs easy access to the information here. It's been
a learning experience for me way beyond problems with Defender.

Web-based forums are the future, I suspect. NNTP diehards like me shouldn't
say that, and there's an awful lot that I see wrong with every HTML-based
forum I've seen, but they are just more flexible and easier for folks to get
to use.

I really value the committment Microsoft has had to keeping HTML and NNTP
access to support groups--and hope that is not disappearing.

Well, Windows Mail still supports NNTP.

I've been meaning to spend more time in that space. I ran my main machine
and all email etc, out of beta XP for most of that beta. I haven't come
anywhere near doing that with Vista.
