Notification area problem

Two problems: In the notification area of my computer a new icon has
appeared that says it is for "updates for Windows service pack 2", however,
the updates are false. I haven't installed them because I was suspicious,
but now that icon won't go away (even though in properties I clicked it to
"always hide".
The second problem is that when I go to the start menu to turn off the
computer, the box that comes up that says "hibernate", "shut down", and
"restart" has a little sheild type icon on the "shut down" icon. Underneath
it says that if you hit shut down, the computer will automatically install
the updates.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of these things? I tried my Norton
A-V and ran spywareblaster and AdAware 6.0 but they didn't help.

Anyone who can help will be dubbed a god in my book!
