notification area problem

I have suddenly lost the ability to customize my notification area. I go to
the taskbar, right-click, hit properties, and hit customize in the
notification area part of the dialog box, but I cannot change the conditions
for any of the icons. Whatever they are at is the only option I have. In
other words, there are no drop-down menus any more.

The only thing I did recently is add a Brother printer, which seems to work
fine. I would like to hide one of the Brother icons.

Actually, that's not true. I also upgraded my Internet Explorer to 7 at the
same time.
