Notification area of the taskbar

Is there a way to remove items from this area? I have found the hide
always choice under the taskbar dialog, but it just moves them out of view
with little arrows. I want to remove something from there completely.
 
Tell the program that puts the icon there not to. All icons are from running programs (eg the Current Items). The past items are not actually there. There just were at least once and windows just wants to know what to do if you start that program again.
