Notification area has new icons that I want out of there but...

I can't seem to find how to turn these nasty buggers off so that the next time I start up my computer they're not there. I have one that reads "scanner is not ready" I don't have the scanner with me here in Japan so I can't even run the program without connecting it - can I. I thought I just had to go to the options or properties but I have no way of getting there. Or am I way out in left field. Any advice for a beginner?

Go to Device Manager. Right click on your scanner {under image devices} and
select Properties. In the drop down list at the bottom of the first tab,
select Do not use this device. This will keep the driver from loading and
should prevent the warning message. Just reverse the process when you have
a scanner again.

To go to Device Manager, right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager.
