nothing happens when trying to connect DV cam to computer

When I plug in the camcorder using the firewire(?) 1394 port nothing happens.
I've checked to see if the device is working properly and it says it is, but
in a different spot the device manager says there is a network adapter using
that port. WMM and Nero don't list my camera under video capture devices.
I've read many of the other posts and I get very confused as to what I can
do. I'm running windows xp sp2 trying to connect a sony handycam. I don't
have any other camera to check the connection, or any way to check the cord.
I recently installed a sony external dvd burner that is connected using the
front usb port. Thanks for any advice!
 
p.s.
the camera is using external power, not battery and this is the first time
trying this. I've read there is a problem with sp2 drivers but I don't know
if I should change them or not. Regarding the network adapter using that
port - when it is enabled the "2 computers" show a 400mbps connection on the
task bar. I don't use this connection for anything. I guess the problem is
trying to change that port so that it will recognize the camera? Thanks!

The actual 1394 port is indeed identified as a "net adapter", and should be
prefaced by "1394".
You should also have listed in device manager seperate entries for the:
"IEEE 1394 Bus host controller(s)"?
Are any entries marked by an exclaimation mark/questionmark/Red cross?
Or, Does the phantom useage of that port display if the cam is not
connected?

This is a link to the MS knowledge base, this article is a guide on how to
display "hidden" devices, try it and hopefully it will identify the phantom
use
of the port?

If no "hidden" item is revealed, then you have nothing to lose trying an
UNinstall/REinstall.
RIGHT click on the troublesome 1394 net adapter, select "Uninstall"
you will receive a warning, click "OK" to proceed, when complete -
REBOOT, and *hopefully* XP will reinstall correctly!

I have the seperate entry that lists the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host
Controller, which is working fine according to the device manager, and the
1394 Net Adapter. This has a red cross through it if I disable it, but
either way it doesn't make a difference. No phantom usage showed for that
port, but there was a "ghosted" Microsoft TV/Video Connection listed farther
down. It was listed as currently not connected to the computer (code 45)
Does this mean anything? I'll wait to uninstall/reinstall as a last resort!

The basics indicate that your camcorder is faulty? Or,
the firewire cable is either faulty or not inserted correctly.

The camcorder appears to work otherwise, so I'll be taking the cable back to
the store. Thank you!
 
Eh? You can't get it too work, so you can't say it isn't faulty at this
stage.
Have a read of these two apges of mine which list various fixes to try and a
testing proceedure, which will then rule out the cam as being working or
not. It does mean finding someone else with a cam though to do this, so get
asking your friends, or take teh cam adn cable back to the shop and get them
to test it in the shop for you.
