I would like to record daily activities in Outlook in a similar way to a
paper diary. Is this possible in Outlook (2003) - if not is there a product
that has this facility ideally linking to the Outlook calendar

I have tried using Journal folders and either I am using them incorrectly or
it does not do what I want.
On a dialy basis I would like to make entries (Captains Kirk/Picard and
Bridget Jones) and be able to click on any date (ideally in Outlook calendar)
to see what I wrote on that date

You can do that two ways:

1) Create items in your Journal folder and use a day/week/month or timeline view of that folder to show the activities by date.

2) Create new items in your Calendar folder, maybe marking them with a special category (Diary?) to distinguish them from normal appointments so that you can have filtered views of either normal appointments or diary entries.
