NotepadXP ? Best Notepad replacement

I downloaded this program but it only gives me a runtime error.
I did email them but get no answer. It all seems susppious.
Can anyone suggest what they think the best (freeware) replacement for
Notepad is. Most of them don't have spell checkers. I am only looking
for an upgraded version of Notepad ,with spell checking and maybe a
few extras. I am not looking for a complex site builder.

I use Metapad but there's no built-in spellchecker.

Do you want a small and fast Notepad replacement with more features
than MS's Notepad? Then I suggest Metapad (no spell check though).

Do you want a fully fledged text and programmer's editor? Then I
suggest PSPad (comes with spell check built in, many languages).
