Is there a Notepad replacement program that has a spell checker built
in? Or a stand alone spell checker that can be used with Notepad?

Thanks.

Seabat,

in?

I know it's not the answer you're looking for but it might just help.
And it's free, quick and effective if your content is going out on the
web.

A few weeks ago I needed to load the Google tool bar for another
purpose and last week I noticed it had an on-line spell check that
works for ANY open form so I gave it a try.

Now I've used many spell checkers over the years from stand alone, to
MS Word and Word Perfect and even OO lately. I've also use several
on-line for mail etc and most are a pain in the ass. Yahoo is slow and
clunky and Blogger steals all my line terminations from my pasted post.
The rest I won't even bother talking about.

BUT!

This Google thing is amazingly simple and effective. I've used it for
everything lately and the experience just keeps getting better and
better. I've even started pasting off-line things into a web form just
to use it them paste them back. It's that good.

No, I don't work for Google and a lot of their products aren't that
great.

But this one is.

Thanks.

WordTabs 3.30 by Skip Bremer has a built-in spell checker. Unfortunately the
author stopped development on this program years ago, but it remains a great
editor with many excellent features. I have happily used it for years as my
Notepad substitute. You can get it here:

Give it a look. Hope this helps.

I find most editors either extremly simple, or with tools aimed towards
codeing.

Not may, or actually only one that I could find is aimed towards creative
writing. That is Copywriter. Unfortunately installation doens't work on my
pc.

I'm still looking for a good creative writers editor (see thread below)

Metapad + Aspell

I'll agree with you about Metapad because I've been using Metapad for
years & it is, IMO, the best freeware Notepad replacement. It doesn't
have the 64 KB file limit that Notepad has, yep, Notepad will lock up
if you try to load TXT files which are larger than 64KB which is stupid
because most TXT files which you can download from the NET are larger
than 64KB.

To anyone who wants to know, you can download metapad from
http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/ . Just download, unzip & rename
metapad.exe to notepad.exe & copy if over Microsoft Notepad.

Notepad does not have this 64kb limit, not since Win2k, I believe.

Actually, there is a little more to that, especially for Win 2k and XP.
Best to point to the Metapad FAQ on this:

Steve Yandl & Jason Levine wrote a short script in Oct 2000 called
"spell.vbs".

I don't know where you would get it now.

You highlight any text you have highlighted in any application, then hit
the hotkey for the program. It copies the text to the clipboard and
then runs Microsoft Word's spellchecker against it, and then finally
returns your corrected to the clipboard so that you can paste it
anywhere you wish.

I use it and it wroks nicley. Oops! :-)

You need to have MS Word installed.
