I got spoiled from the Notepad in Windows 2000 at the office as it
seemed to just automatically number pages when they were printed.

I find that any small notepad is good. I have tried several and they
all seem to work well. Currently, I have stayed with Metapad which is
cool because one renames the original notepad.exe to notepad.exe.old
and then one puts metapad.exe in the same folder under new name of
notepad.exe.

Was hoping to get something just as good as Metapad and just as small
but that has the added feature of automatically numbering all printed
pages. The current research page I'm working on will get very large
in size and so need this feature now for sure.

Thanks! :oD

Darn, knew I was forgetting something: the Windows 2000 notepad also
put the text file name in footer besides numbering. I've just printed
3 text documents and had to go write in the text name.

Thanks everyone! :oD

Cousin FitWell ....

You might try and monkey with the entries
in .... File .... Page Setup .... in NotePad ...

In the Header box : &f ....

prints file name at the top of the page

In the Footer box : Page &p of &P ....

prints page number at the bottom of the page

I fished a bit in Windows help and on Google
for a list of these Header & Footer codes
for the Page Setup Dialog box, but didn't find anything ...

Someone on another NG suggested looking
in NotePad Help and IE Help for the Page Setup
&Codes for the Header and Footer of printed pages ....

NotePad ....

Insert the open file's name or "(untitled)"
if the file has no name. .................. &f

Insert the date. .......................... &d

Insert the time specified
by your computer's clock. ................. &t

Insert page numbers. ...................... &p

Insert an ampersand (&). .................. &&

Align the header or footer
to the left, center, or right. ............ &l, &c, or &r

Internet Explorer

Window title .............................. &w
Page address (URL) ........................ &u
Date in short format ...................... &d
Date in long format ....................... &D
Time same as Contral Panel format ......... &t
Time in 24-hour format .................... &T
Current page number ....................... &p
Total number of pages ..................... &P
Centered text (following &b) .............. &b
Right-aligned text (following &b&b) ....... &b&b
A single ampersand (&) .................... &&

Curious. Won't using File Association via the folder option work just as
well rather than the complicated rename and replace magic trick???

Thats what I've always used.

Could this not be accomplished with the file association under folders (in
Win 98 and Win xp anyway)

Yes, but it's in order to keep the old Notepad. Also, notepad.exe is
already associated with a bunch of stuff automatically in Windows that
I didn't want to run into difficulties down the road. The advice is
to just rename metapad.exe to notepad.exe and I've found that that
works well.

Metapad is not a _perfect_ replacement, however. Every once in a
while I come across a file that it can't open so I'll go to the old
notepad and use that for that file, re-save to TXT and then that
usually does the trick.

Bottom line, as in everything, do what works best for you and what you
feel most comfortable with.
