Copy the notepad.exe from C:\windows to c:\windows\system [overwrite]. If this does not help, try this fix:

When I go to open a txt file, it says whatever txt file I
am trying to open is not a valid Win32 application.
Oh man, is there any way to get this fixed?
Sure appreciate any help given!
.
Yes, PC is clean.
I noticed that the notepad icon on my desktop had changed
from the pad to the exe icon and it would not open.
I then deleted that icon, went into windows and found
notepad with the pad icon, and sent it as a shortcut to my
desktop. I can open notepad from that shortcut, but still
cannot open txt files.
When I go to open the txt file in the "open with" list,
Notepad is in the "other" programs list with the exe icon
and not the notepad icon.
When I click Run ... notepad.exe, notepad opens.
When I click Run ... %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe, I
get "Windows cannot find" error.
Baffleing to say the least...
Any suggestion?
