There are several viruses out there that replace notepad.exe. I would
recommend the following:
1) Do a complete virus scan, Ad-aware, and Spybot S&D scans. When my
notepad.exe was replaced with a trojan, my AV failed to find the virus, but
Ad-aware did.
2) Do a complete search for notepad.exe with Start -> Search and then note
the location, size, modification date and creation date of all of the
notepad.exe files. When my notepad.exe was replaced by a trojan, all my my
notepad.exe files were replaced.
3) Remove the infected notepad.exe files. That is unless they have not
already been removed by your AV, Ad-aware or Spybot S&D.
4) Find a replacement notepad.exe. This may be dependent on the version of
Windows that you are running. You may want to check the MS Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx
for how to replace notepad.exe. I got my replacement for WinXP SP1 at:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html#notepad
5) If you use a text editor a lot, you may want to look for a superior
replacement. There are several FREE notepad replacements such as EditPad,
NoteTab and others.
Good luck,
Steve
