I've never had or dealt with Notebooks, and a friend is looking for
one. Any suggestions for a cheap one? Obviously, I'd like to avoid a
Celeron, but the prices seem to really jump when they go to a Pentium.
His needs are minimal, but I'd still rather avoid the Celeron. But if
it's going to be a couple hundred dollar difference, the Pentium isn't
worth the extra $. TIA!

you should look at the intel centrino notebooks they are in a decent price
range, some as low as £700 which is about $350 - $400 max

otherwise maybe consider looking into AMD, I know a place online (UK
website) that sells pretty cheap laptops with AMD64 processors around the
$350 - $400 mark

http://www.tiny.com

They were pretty big retailer in the UK, seems smaller now, products also
seem a bit better than they were, they used to suck, but a friend of mine
has a tiny PC and its holding up good.

I would reccomend IBM laptops as I think they are the best ones going, or
HP, or even dell, but the prices on those notebooks are damn steep when you
start looking at the pentiums and centrinos, so keep shopping around

chck out kelkoo.com or even ebay, you might find a good deal on a second
hand notbook, I know some of the alienware laptops on ebay wre selling for
cheap, and they rock!!
