Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500. I recently spent AU900.00 replacing the
motherboard because of a nonspecific problem that affected RAM. Now,
yesterday the LCD screen began to flash different colours. I switched
the notebook off and restarted. I got the Windows XP starting up screen
with 5 large verticle bands of yellow across the screen. When it came to
starting the welcome screen the LCD went black. I tried starting in
safe mode and although it does work, the screen is almost illegible due
to horrible splotches and lines everywhich way.

I pulled out the LCD screen and checked all the connections etc and all
seemed in order. When I restarted I got the same problems to begin with
and this time it opened windows perfectly for about 10 seconds and then
it went black again.

I don't think this is a software problem because my system is pretty
much stable. I am now thinking it must be a defective video card. It
seems to make sense with the flashing colours and intermittent
problems.

Does that sound about right? I think I'm just about done paying for
repairs on this machine. I will pull the video card and have a look but
I don't know what that will achieve.

TIA.

I don't see how you can pull the video card on a laptop. Yes, it sounds
like your laptop is still having hardware issues. Call Dell.

There is a thermal pad that must be placed on top
of the video adapter to absorb heat. It may be
that the person servicing your Dell notebook
neglected to reapply the thermal pad. This pad
is only available from Dell.
