Notebook colers?

Do they actually extend the life of the notebook by keeping it cool from
underneath or is that just advertising spiel?
Are they a worthwhile buy?

If it is true that heat shortens the life of any electronic
device, then the spiel is factual and not hype. The indicator
of whether a cooler is needed or not is just how comfortable
is the laptop sitting on one's thighs while running at full
speed. If the heat feels uncomfortable, then a cooler would
definitely be beneficial for the laptop's longevity (as well
as the user's thighs.)
