Have new windows xp, looking for the analogous program to
MS WORKS, which had "user defined templates" included. I
cannot find anything like this in the new system. Also,
have e mail with an attachment that is an excel spread
sheet, which I cannot open. Any advice?

If you think that Windows XP includes Works or an analogous
program, sorry to tell you that you're mistaken. Neither it, nor
any other version of Windows, has ever included Works or any
significant other application software. Such programs have to be
bought.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows,
came with Works, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled it
part of the package he sold you, not because that version of
Windows came with it.

The same is true of Excel. But if all you want to do is view
existing Excel spreadsheets, rather than create them yourself,
you don't need a copy of Excel. You can download a free Excel
viewer at
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx

There is nothing included with Basic XP.

You can buy Microsoft Works at your local computer store. You can also
buy Microoft Office, Word Perfect, or Star Office there also. You can
get OpenOffice for free from their download site.

You can download from Microsoft's web site an Excel viewer file. Or you
can ask the person who sent you the file to send you the file in another
format that you have software, or send it on paper.

Computers come with whatever application software you order
or what the mfg'r bundled. To save base advertised price,
they often don't install ANY applications.

If you want WORKS you have to buy it, either with the
computer or afterward. WORKS SUITE includes WORD. WORKS
has a spreadsheet and database (both simpler than those with
OFFICE)

You can download a free viewer for Excel spreadsheets
(Google will take you to the page ""ms office"+viewer"

WORKS can open most WORD programs and OFFICE can open most
WORKS programs if you get the converters and you open the
program and then use the program to select and open the
file.
