Note number not increased when synchronizing or making direct entry to Note section of Outlook 2003

I am using Outlook 2003 and iPAQ with Active Synch to connect the two.
On my Outlook Today page in the right column, I have Inbox, Outbox and
Notes. If I make the note directly in the Note section using the New button
or if I make the note on my iPAQ and synch it over Outlook 2003 fails to
increase the number on the line to the right of the Note header on the
Outlook Today page the same way it does for the Inbox and the Outbox.
If I get new email in my Inbox while looking at the Outlook Today page
(which is where I tend to leave Outlook) the number increments right away,
but the Note function fails to act at all.
Any MVP or other person out there have any ideas as to what I can do?
