Our Windows XP refuses to start.
While working on it, an error popped up, with only one button, ok, to press. i presses it, and three seconds later, the same error poppd up. this continued for several minutes, and, unable to do anything else, i shut down the computer. i attempted to restart the computer, only to be sent to a screen that had a lot of writing on it.

we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
if your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
if a previous start-up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose START WINDOWS NORMALLY.

START WINDOWS NORMALLY
USE THE UP AND DOWN KEYS TO MOVE THE HIGHLIGHT TO YOUR CHOICE.
there was no recent software or hardware change, and windows xp was working normally for several days. selecting first the LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION option, i froze the computer on the above screen. i restarted the computer again, and selected RESTART WINDOWS NORMALLY, only to the same result. same for the three SAFE MODE options. restarting the computer again, i noticed at the bottom of the screen was a 25 second timer, until windows restarted itself. i let that run through, and was sent to the loading page. the computer looked as though it were loading for 10 minutes, when it normally only takes 2 or 3 minutes to load. at this point i actually had to turn off the computer using the power switch on the back, because the turn off button on the front did not work.
the computer now refuses to do anything, except restart to the same screen, and we are in desperate need of the files on it.
