I just installed, check the updates button it just hangs, I am behind a
firewall and there is no setting for a proxy server if it is needed.
Antispyware beta1 worked fine.

I have searched this forum and have not found the answer to my problem yet. I
also installed Defender a few days ago (I was using Antispyware Beta 1) and
it downloaded the latest updates right after installation. Now when I click
on the "Check For Updates" button, nothing happens. I dont get a message that
it is checking for updates, that all updates are current, that there is an
update available, nothing. All I can do after waiting several minutes is
click "OK". Is this normal? How do I know if I have the latest update? I have
gone to windows update and it does not show I need anything. I am using this
at home and my firewall is Zone Alarm. I can't find anything in the firewall
settings that would prevent me from checking for updates, but maybe I am
missing it. Can anyone help me figure this out?
Thank you,
PaB

Sorry I missed this one.

This sounds like balloon notifications have been turned off. The
description sounds like exactly what would happen if no update is available,
and notifications are off.

Can you download the TweakUI powertoy from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

(see tweak UI in the right column)

Install it, do start, run, tweakui, enter

highlight "Taskbar and Start menu" in the left column, and check off "enable
balloon tips" on the right. If this is, in fact, already enabled, you might
try unchecking it, applying, and then checking again, and applying.
