G'day to all.

I would like to know if I can prevent XP from shutting (and/or restarting)
UNTIL I decide to do so?

In other words, I don't want XP updates (or anything) to shutdown and
restart my system. I've looked at all the Policies and can't see anything
obvious.

Thanks in advance.

here is what works for me..........I set XP updates to notify me of updates
.....not install them automatically.
When I get the notification I go to the website and have it do a scan I then
pick what to download and install. When that is done it asks me if I wish to
shut down now or wait............

Do not choose to automatically download *and* install the updates for you.
Then do the updates yourself when you are ready to.

Sorry to all, I didn't explain my question as well as I should have.

MS Updates is only an example. What I am looking for is a way to prevent ANY
program (service) from shutting down (and/or restarting) the system. I want
to be able to shutdown and restart only when I want.

Sorry for the incomplete question.

Thanks...

Don't install applications that have the right/function to shutdowmn/restart
your computer without your express permission/telling it to do so. I am
unsure what you are looking for here. You decide what is on your computer
and thus - you decide when your computer reboots.

I cannot think of any application I have installed that I do not have
control over the preferences of that even has an option of rebooting the
system/shutting down the system. Example: I know som CD/DVD burning
applications can be set to 'shutdown after they finish burning' - but that
is a preference I set in the program itself.

How is this becoming an issue for you? Have you become infested/infected
with something?

What programs are shutting your system down without 1st asking???
Having done numerous updates and installs I have very rarely run across a
program nowadays that does not tell you it needs to shut down for the
update/install to complete..........it doesn't mean you need to do it right
then and there but....

Yes, but unfortunately if you say "wait," it waits and then asks you
again. And again. And again...

Thanks Peter, but you answered my question in your Post by saying "VERY
RARELY", which by definition supports my very question and scenario.

In any case, I found a utility which prevents shutdown/restart UNLESS you've
Pre-authorized the process/app.

I tried it today (along with 3 of my Senior SE types). Works like a "HOT
DAMN".

We've contacted the vendor and will be working with them as a Canadian
Vendor.

Thanks to all.

Cheers...
