Since 1999 I have had an HP ScanJet 5200 scanner on my computer, OS is
Windows 98SE. The computer had to be completely reformatted due to a nasty
trojan (we think). They were able to get back and save all the data and
everything but my scanner seem to be working okay. I tried to add scanner in
Add/Remove hardware but it isn't showing and won't let me add it.

Since then I have not been able to use the scanner. I keep getting an error
"Failure to communicate with scanner (1215)". I have tried to uninstall, but
it will not let me. I have two hard drives C and D and when I check both
hard drives, it looks like the data on both is identical. I installed the CD
on the computer again but I still get the above error. The scanner will not
copy or scan. I checked HP's web site but it didn't help me. I tried
downloading the update software which is 55+M and I am on dial-up so it
would take hours maybe days and I keep getting disconnected. I checked to
see if I could order the update on CD but it appears that it is only
available by downloading.

Any suggestions???

Add/Remove programs is NOT where you add a scanner. If you see a HP scanner
in the Add/Remove programs, remove it, that is very likely a corrupted
install.

There is a installation program on the software CD that came with the
scanner. The program is usually called "Setup.exe". Most CDs will autorun
the setup for the scanner when you insert the CD in the drive. If the CD
does not autorun. Use the Run item on the Start menu and browse to the CD
and run the "SETUP.EXE"

If you no longer have the original software CD, you can get the software
from HP.
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Tick Download drivers and software.
Type scanjet 5200 in the text box. Then click the double arrow.

To bad about the dialup.
The download is 55.39 Megabytes. The one you want is the one listed under
Driver. Do not get the Update you do not need it for Windows 98 SE.

I do not see an offer for purchasing a CD.

Hi...

Just a thought...

Dialup will make 55 megs nigh impossible. Do you have
a neighbor, friend, or relative with a fast connection
who might download it for you ? If so, ask them to
help you out by grabbing it and burning it to a cd for you.
