When mailmerging (in Word 2002) via email, a window comes up to prepare the
email I want to send, I also get a choice whether to do this as an
Attachment, Plain Text or HTML.
In the 2 former cases a confirmation window comes up, in the latter it
doesn't, hence I cannot send emails in HTML format to a group of people.

Is this Outlook's fault, or does anyone know what I can do about this ?

Thank you,
Frankie.

What kind of confirmation window? HTML merge should work just fine.

A window that says "The program is trying to send an email on your behalf",
underneath it has the recipient's address and then the usual OK and Cancel
buttons.
But like I said, it only comes up for an Attachment or Plain Text email.

Hope that informs you better,
Frankie.

This is by design. To avoid the prompts, use HTML format for the merge.
