Since I installed SP2 I have had the occasional time when the PC has failed
to shut down. It happens about 1in5. Easy to resolve by pressing and holding
main button on tower but is this a bug?

well it doesn't happen with mine, so it's NOT a defect in SP2.

My XP / SP2 setup has started to take longer to shut down, so I'd be
interested to know if anyone has been further down this road and discovered
a cure.

Hi, Slow Boot.

I've heard many good reports and a few problems from SP2 - but I've never
heard of this one! I've not heard anybody else complain of this, and I read
thousands of messages in WinXP groups each week.

Can you please document your statement?

Hi, Rod.

What is the make and model of your computer? Have you asked MS Tech Support
about this problem?

I've been running SP2 for about a month now and have not had such problem.
I read thousands of WinXP newsgroup messages a week and I've not seen this
reported by anyone else. Yes, I've seen reports of WinXP failing to shut
down, but none that related specifically to SP2.

Wow, thanks for the link. I'll have to take some time out and work my way
through it. As no one else has reported this then it may well be down to my
PC. Thing is that before installing SP2 I did a complete re-install of XP
Home on my PC. I've scanned with Norton for viruses and used Spybot for
spyware. Not had the problem for 24 hours now so fingers crossed. Only new
bit of kit I've had recently that did not agree was Pinnacle PCTV USB2. If I
get problems again I will discard the PCTV and see how I go. Thanks to
everyone for the interest. As someone has already mentioned I'd too be
interested to hear where Slow boot with XP got his info quote 'It is not a
bug. It is a defect in Service Pack 2 that Microsoft has been unable to
fix'.
