I am currently connected to the internet via a cable
connection which my network connection folder does not
show. I am having no connection problems but the
connection Icon is not visible. This occured since I cured
the MSBlast virus the hard way by deleting all of the
hidden exes' that were random in my system32 folder.
Perhaps I deleted an essential file for displaying the
information in the my network folder. This may be because
service pack 1 as well. There is also no connection
displayed in my lower right hand corner. Thank you.

Missing Network and Dialup connections have been an ongoing problem if:
1)You have a network card that doesn't play nice with the registry
(enumeration), often times a wireless card
2) You delete network card entries "aggressively" in the registry
3) Ugly service pack,
4) Make up your own reason, etc

Microsoft Knowledge base and JSI list many fixes and steps to go through.
Try them first. A good starting point is :
http://www.jsiinc.com/subg/tip3100/rh3147.htm

You can also try a system restore in XP if it's turned on, but do it prior
to the virus hit. I haven't used system restore before, but I hear it
works for some. eg, restoring your registry from backup etc.

I didn't have a backup and the knowledge base articles didn't work for me,
so I did the following which did work:

note, I'm running w2k, but your steps should be similar for XP
From a similiar machine go into regedit and export the following keys to a
files:
Navigate to this branch then, (menu) registry, => export =>selected branch
=>file on diskette
Note: make sure it's "CurrentControlSet" and NOT "ControlSet001"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network]
in another separate file:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip]

Put the diskette in the machine your trying to fix and run those two reg
files you just created. They are in current control set, so you could use
"last know good" if this blows up your machine. Mine worked fine. This
creates a "good" set of branches in the registry.

Reboot the machine. When it comes backup you will see the missing icons,
however they may not work.

Next go into device manager and "uninstall" your Network adapters.

Reboot again.

When the system comes back up again, you should now be able to configure
your network card correctly.

Use process at your own risk, I'm not sure if it effects your SID.

God Bless !
