I need help in solving a "program not responding" power
point and speeding it up a bit. I never had any problems
with it before. I recently installed windows xp
professional. Could that be my problem?

Which version of PPT, and what are you doing when you get the "program
not responding" error?

Also, re your WinXP Pro installation, did you upgrade another operating
system with all your applications still installed?

It should be 2002 version, i did have WinXP Home edition
and installed PPT from a WinXP Pro edition. My system
information still has the Home edition.

Oh yeah, I also noticed that there is a problem with
office assistant after I try to close the program. The
same thing occurs with Microsoft Word, the "program not
responding" prompt comes on and again after I try to
close it there is a problem with office assitant.

Regarding the WinXP Pro vs WinXP Home, PPT doesn't really have anything
to do with that. Windows is the operating system. So what I'm guessing
is that you have Windows XP Home as your operating system, and maybe you
had Office XP Small Business Edition -- which doesn't come with
PowerPoint. And then you installed PowerPoint from an Office XP
Professional CD? PPT 2002 is included in Office XP Professional.

Sorry to be pedantic. I just wanted to clarify that you didn't upgrade
the Windows operating system. That can often cause difficulties with
your applications (such as Word, PPT, Excel, etc.)

So what are you doing when you receive the "program not responding"
error? Does this happen when you first open the program, or does it
happen when you try to change a font, or when you save, or some other
time? Or does it only happen when you try to close the program, and you
also see the problem with the Office Assistant at the same time?

The message occurs when I open another program and come
bact to PPT. It also occurs when I try to close the
program or when the Office Assistant message comes on.
The program becomes really sluggish when it does move on
then it doesn't respond at all.

I have to close it using Windows Task Manager.

Ok. I first suspect video drivers and hardware acceleration. Update your
video drivers from the computer mfg's website. Then change hardware
acceleration as described at
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm

If those don't help, holler back.

Or if they do help, holler back and then we can tackle the Office
Assistant problem.

I would suggest running Detect and Repair. It sounds like when you changed
versions something missed. (Gee - I think I gave this answer once already
today - Not very often I get to give the same advice twice in a day!)

Thanks for your help. I actually contacted Dell Support
and after a couple of hours, we managed to band aid the
problem. It seems there was something wrong with the
Office Assistant when I tried to install the WinXP Pro.
We had to remove it and then install it again. Then
deactivate the Office Assistant. For now I can't access
Office Assistant, but PPT seems to be working fine with
great speed.

Thanks again for all your help.
