NOT RECOGNIZING SETUP.EXE IN MANY PROGRAMS

When I click on "setup.exe" for about five different programes absolutely
nothing happens. CD-Roms are Ok, disks are OK but the file is not recognized
by Windows XP. One of the programs is even Microsoft's own "Ancient Lands".
The darn thing will not install no matter what I do. Same thing for
Flagtowers "World War I" interactive Cd and Comptons Interactive
Encyclodpedia. What could this be?

Hi Gilbert,

Try disabling your antivirus software first.

This problem existed even before I had virus software installed. To make a
long story short, I got rid of that cursed Norton Anti-Virus after much trial
and tribulation. I am almost half convinced it was Norton's Anti-Virus that
caused it. (It came pre-installed with the computer).
I got "Spybot", "Lavasoft" and now Avast as my Anti-Virus. So I have checked
out all of the usual "dial up", "virus" "worms" etc. My system is clean that
way. EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS, except about 10 programs that will not boot up.
But the common denominator seems to be setup.exe files.

I see that I am not the only one posting this kind of problem.

Really getting fed up Windows ever since Windows 95. Ever since then I
whenever I have "upgraded" my windows system or EVEN GET A BRAND NEW COMPUTER
something else doesn't work. I thought Windows XP was supposed to be the be
all and the end all.

Golly, now there are even ads for Windows Vista! I'm supposed to upgrade
again and "hope" that everthing will work. No not this time. I have
'Upgraded' windows four time and every upgrade has resulted in me throwing
hundreds of dollars of software that will not work.

This seems to be exactly the same problem. When I key in the problem in the
Windows Q&A section, I don't even get a hit.

It is all so very discouraging.

Sometimes this is caused by a previous installation leaving its setup file
listed in the registry

you can try this registry fix. copy the text below (only that between the
**** ) to a text file, name it "remove_setup.reg" , then right click on the
file and select Merge

******
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\setup.exe]
"(Default)"=-
*******

Hey Val, just before reading your reply I found a fix for it. The answer was
in the knowledge base under the subject "Can't open EXE Files". But you were
pointing in the right direction. It was a corrupt registry key that was not
being "repaired" because I had system restore on. Thank you anyway, I have
been living with this problem for over two months now.
