Not recognizing Hard Drive

I installed my old hard drive, just to get the old doc's and such off,
by using the cable and power from the cd/dvd drive....nothing. I had
read in this group that this was a temp. option rather than buying an
drive enclosure. I look at "my computer" and there is nothing there.
I tried with both as the master and slave pin settings on both the
master and slave sections of the cable...(since I have a writer and a
seperate DVD drive)

Any hints of tips? I can't figure out what I am doing wrong and would
rather not buy an enclosure just to use once, since the drive is old
and small.

Thanks in advance,

open your bios at startup and check to see if the hard disk i
reconnised.Might want to run hard disk detection or just set t
auto.Simple solution hope it work

Hi,

Make sure the jumper on the HDD you're installing, matches the jumper
setting on the cd/dvd drive you just removed..

I have checked the Bios and it isn't recognizing it. It only had the
options of Auto, CDROM and something else that didn't look familiar,
but none of them worked. At one point I did get a message that the
drive was not ATA compatable.

I admit that it has been probably 10 years since I have messed with a
BIos. A lot of the wording has changed.

I also tried ALL of the jumper settings just to make sure, and nada.

Could the thing have died? It had worked in the old machine just
minutes before I tried to switch it. Now I gave the old PC away, so I
can't put it back in and try it there:(

Thanks for your help

It might help to ID the mobo and HDD for more incite on what to do by me or
others..
Have you updated the BIOS lately..?
How big & what make is the old HDD..?
Could the data cable have come loose from the mobo connector..?
Might replace the data cable if 40 to an 80 pin..?
Make sure the red stripe or red edge of the data cable is connected to pin
#1.. looking at the back of the HDD, the #1 pin is to the left of the
(molex) power connector.. So, the red edge on the data cable should be
facing out as you are looking at it in the drive bay from the open side of
the case..

Of course the drive could fail, if some how a static electric discharge
happened, it's that time of year, you know, if your in a colder region of
the World..
Good luck..
