Not recognizing COM ports in add/rem hardware

I have a IBM A22 laptop with a Lucent WinModem installed
on it. Windows does not seem to be recognizing it.

I have one port, COM1, with no conflicts. I tried to
install new hardware, but when I get to the end and it
asks me to select the port I wish to use, there are no
ports listed. I installed a new port (COM3), rebooted, and
tried to install modem again. No COM ports listed...again.
So this time I uninstalled both COM1 and COM3, rebooted,
amd let Windows install COM1.

I once again tried to reinstall the modem (standard
56kFlex modem), and once again...no COM ports listed.

Any ideas?

The Winmodem card may have gone bad thus not letting windows see it as a
valid com port device. Also check to make sure the card is installed
correctly and has not came out of it's connector on the main board.

Please ask on the Thinkpad support forum http://pc.ibm.com They are helpful and competent.

All this doesn't make sense :(

just a hint: the modem provides a COM port by itself, so no need (but a
big mistake) to assign it to any existing COM port.

just a correction, if this is an external modem, then you have to say
which COM port it is connected to. Internal modems provide the port
just like i wrote above.
