I've converted several files to WMA and burned them onto a disk but when I
try to play them in my DVD, it comes up with the message "This disk cannot be
played". It is the same disk I have used in the past and played successfully
in my DVD player. Can someone please help? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks

Win XP or Vista?

What type of files did you convert?

How did you burn the DVD...is it a
Data DVD or a Video DVD?

Sorry, John. I guess I didn't really give enough info.

I've converted .avi files as I find they're so big, you can only fit one,
maybe two onto a disk and I'm currently using Win XP.

To be honest, I'm not sure what type of burn I'm doing. I'm basically
copying the file into my "D" drive (previously used for writing .avi files
onto a CD-R disk) so I'm guessing it's probably a video DVD.

As you can tell, I'm not particularly computer literate. I can do most of
the basics but I'm not sure why this one isn't working. I've tried saving as
a file compatiable to the computer and also as PAL (which I know the DVD
plays) but with no luck.

I'm sure I'm doing something really simple and obvious wrong - I'm just not
sure what.

Thanks for your help :)

Maybe you just made a typo...but .wma is an Audio
format...maybe you meant .wmv?

Just copying files to a DVD would be a Data DVD
and file size would be important but when authoring
a Video DVD...the duration of the movie is what is
important and that requires DVD Authoring software.

((If these happen to be DivX or Xvid files I can tell
you I've had nothing but trouble trying to create
Video DVDs with them. The best bet is to purchase
a DivX/Xvid compatible DVD player that will play
them as is. Then if one is not more than...say...
700 MB...you can even burn it on a CD. In this
case...Data disks is all you need to create.))

Here's some info on a free DVD Authoring program...

DVD Flick
http://www.dvdflick.net/

Be sure to read the Guide:
http://www.dvdflick.net/guide.php

If you have problems downloading DVD Flick...
try the following direct link:

http://tinyurl.com/6gt7p2
or...
http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/dvdflick/dvdflick_setup_1.3.0.4.exe

Save the file to a folder on your hard drive and
install from there.

Tutorials:

DVD Flick Tutorial
http://beginwithsoftware.com/videoguides/dvd-flick-guide.html

Burn Any PC Video Format into DVD
http://www.freevideoworkshop.com/dvdflicktutorial.htm

To create a basic Video DVD that should play in a free
standing DVD player...try the following...

Good luck.

First...read the DVD Flick Guide to familiarize yourself
with the program.

Open DVD Flick and insert a blank DVD in your burner.

If your computer's Autoplay window opens....just close it.

Click the Project Settings button and go to...Video /
Target format...residents of USA...choose...NTSC /
Accept.

Left click the Add title button and browse to your
Movie Clips and select the ones you want on the DVD.

You can arrange them by selecting one and then use
the Move Up and Move Down buttons.

Left click the Create DVD button / OK / Yes / Yes.

Wait while the DVD is created.

When the text "Finished Successfully" appears you
may close DVD Flick. Now you can eject your DVD
and play it in your DVD player.

At some point you may wish to purchase more
advanced software like Nero, Roxio, Ulead, etc...but
at least this is a start.

Hi John.

I've just had another look and you are right - it's saved as a Windows Media
Audio/Video file. Should this not still work? I've checked the particulars on
the DVD and it says it will play "CD, WMA, MP3, JPEG, VCD, MPEG4 and DivX"
formats. It also states, however, that it does not support MBR - does the
Movie Maker do this as this would explain the problem.

The size has changed from approx 536kb down to 245kb, which is basically
what I was after. I'm trying to fit two or three files onto a 702mb disk to
save on disk space.

If using Movie Maker isn't the right option (as it appears that my DVD will
play the formats you mention), could you advise on any other options in terms
of compressing the files but still being able to play them on the DVD?

I'm trying to clear out my hard drive but don't want to delete them ...

Thanks for all your help so far. I really appreciate it :)

Your DVD Player supports .wma audio but not .wmv video.

A .wmv file will not play on your DVD Player unless you
convert it to a compatible format or use DVD Authoring
software to burn a Video CD (VCD) or a Video DVD.

For archival purposes you could burn Data DVDs of
the files or you might consider an external hard drive
or even memory cards or flash drives.

Thanks, John.

I'll try the DVD Authoring software you suggested.

Thanks again.
