I'm not a very technical person but here goes.

I have an acer desktop at work and for some reason it will not pick up the
internet. We have tried everything, even changing the cord. We have cable
internet and I'm on a router/hub with 3 other people. When we try to put an
IP address in and save it we go back in and see that the IP address is gone.
It won't hold it.

PLEASE HELP!

Try the free trial version of Network Magic:

Maybe, it's the network cable that's no good anymore. I don't know what
*cord* means. Maybe, you mean card or NIC (Network Interface Card). But
there is nothing to say that the NIC is not going defective either.

depends on the settings of your router. Most are set with DHCP enabled and
the router assigns the IP so you shouldn't have to put one in manually. If
you are setting the IP manually, make sure you're not using the same IP
address on 2 computers, each one has to have a unique IP on the network.
Look in the settings of one of the PC's that is connecting and copy those
settings (except the IP #).

Why are you manually putting in the IP address? Set it to find this
dynamically in the same screen you are manually entering it

There is nothing wrong in using a static IP on a router instead of a DHCP
IP, if the OP even knows what a static IP is as opposed to a DHCP IP.

Good technical answers but it may your machines DOMAIN thats not
recognised on the network. Vista need to be in total harmony for it work
perfectly.

NOT spam. Network Magic is a very good home networking app, particularly
for those not very well-versed in administering their network.

I don't think anybody really answered his question. I am an ISP and have the
same problem with the Acer we bought to do installs. We must enter the Ip
manualy to get into the radios. Just as soon as we pull the network cable
out, the IP resets back to Obtain automatically. Everytime.
