I bought this printer a month or so ago and find it the trickiest, fussiest
printer I ever had. Don't understand how it's so highly rated. Too many
times I click to print, and it doesn't print until I fool around with it,
sometimes turning power off and on. Signals paper jams when there aren't
paper jams. I'd have been happier with my 5 year old Canon if there were an
XP driver for it.

Is anybody else having similar problems with this - or am I just doing
something wrong?

We got rid of a HP 1100 which had all sorts of paper handing problems
and picked up a HL 1440 based on its good reviews.
It had the same sort of problems that you descibe.
Seems like the lights were always flashing.
I added extra memory and nothing changed.
We never knew if it was going to work or not.
Printing envelopes with totally frustrating.

Finally gave up and returned it to Office Max for a refund which we
used to buy a HP 2100.
Other than a bit of skewed paper handling, the HP has worked
flawlessly right out of the box with no screwing around at all.
First print is right now. The Brother took quite a while.

We also have a Brother 1650 duplex laser and it works perfectly.
50,000 prints without a jam or hiccup.

You never know.

Thanks for the replies. I have added more memory. Another thing that I
don't like is that when it has a problem due to resolution, it prints a
separate page telling you all about it and advising that you buy more memory
(which I have done). this happens with the census images from Ancestry.com,
which are difficult, and I don't need to waste paper all that time. I wish
I could turn it off.

I bought mine from Office Max too, so I may see about a return.
