My computer has been getting progressively slower, and after yesterday when i asked for adivice here i thought it would be all fine and dandy

Now my computer just won't work. It loads to the login screen, but when i log into any account it crashes either before the icons have loaded, or once the icons have loaded it freezes. It loads everything incredibly slow.

I dont know whether this is related to any changes i made yesterday, but i am posting from my sister's laptop because it crashes before i can use any programs.

I did make some registry changes, but only the ones prompted by the Spybot teatimer thing, and i accepted all but 3 of them. The ones i did not accept were me accidentally pressing decline. Could this have caused anything big?

Does anyone have any ideas? Because all the problems i keep having are really testing my patients now

Im sorry if i sound rude at the moment, and any help would be greatly appreciated

Oh and incedentally the hsf on my gfx card broke a few days back, so my card is running hot. Could this be anything to do with it?

I know this is not what you want to hear - but based on your previous thread, it sounds like your system is riddled with viruses/spyware etc - in all honesty, the best thing is a complete OS re-install :(

sigh

ive been trying to put that off for so long

ill wait a bit longer to see if anyone has any bright ideas, but to be honest i know that i need a complete format , and probably a new hard drive.

If i get a new OS, can i use the xp install disk from there to reinstall on the current pc with the key on the case, and then use the same install cd to install on my new pc at easter using the code with the OEM os?

I can rephrase that if you want... :D

No its OK - I think I get the idea :p

If I remember what Chris Postill said before, you can use the key from your new OS disk with your old OS disk - but as each disk has a single licence, I wouldn't have thought you could use the new OS disk twice with the same key on different systems.

Now do I need to rephrase? :D

Maybe Chris can come and let us know ;)

Heh you're much better at explaining than i am :P

So if i give it a fresh xp install then that will do the trick?

i will also get a 160gb drive, which comes to £110 - odd, which is a lot to spend on a crap computer so i need to know that it will definately sort this out?

You don't really need a new HD unless you want a bigger one, or yours is knackered -the format will get rid of the nasties.

You can use a NEW CD to install on an OLD PC and use the OLD KEY ... not the new one ... use the new key for the new PC.

... and yes it is legal. :thumb:

PG ... I have said months ago to clean re-install your OS ... now you have to ... you just waisting everybodies time here putting it off.

;)

I knew it was something like that, just got it the wrong way round :D

I'm assuming you've got your old key PG - if not use JellyBean Keyfinder to get it off your system :thumb:

If you always back up important files to CD or Floppy then a complete re-install is the greatest gift a PC`er can have ...

I have done it a few times..mainly coz i get caught by big bugs ...but i never worry about it as i always back up. :thumb:

Virus unable to load sounds like your current problem. Are you able to physically remove hard drive from puter and set it up as slave in another puter with up to date antivirus stuff and then run scan. If formatting is still out of the question, try running in safe mode and for the moment uninstall or disable teatimer. You may have disallowed windows from running.
Other suggestion is to duck down to local newsagent and buy a computer magazine that has XP service pack updates on a cd (only good for once you are up an running at least temporaly). This will confuse the entrenched viruses to the max and stop them from bugging your puter.
If all else fails, you can still get help if you are prepared to follow instructions from microsoft to fix your perverted startup entries. A cd burner would be good for later if you decide to go this way. Dont be too ****ed at the moment. from your description, I would say you have removed some pain in the ass viruses and the usual logical step should their farts prevent you from starting windows, is to repair some important system files that viruses typically luv. I wouldnt mind betting EXPLORER and SVCHOST need to be restored to workable version at least.
And no, I dont want to play pass-the-parcel at the next Taliban convention.;)

Sorry Mucks, i just don't like spending money :(

I've bitten the bullet and bought xp & a new 160gb hard drive. £118 inc delivery and will be delivered tomorrow.

Ah well needed to be done. Cheers Jack, i did most of the stuff you said and it meant i could get the system just about running and most of the important stuff off my drive so i havnt lost anything :)

I don't think there is anything physically wrong with the drive, so perhaps once i've checked it i could donate it to the old crunching team as long as the new drive works?

Good to hear I was sum help offering alternatives;). Steer away from porn sites and sites offering cracks etc and you should be relatively problem free. I use an old pentium 1 running W98 deisgned for cruising sites that run script etc and then transfer stuff I want to my good virus-protected computer. If I get nastys on my P1 system, I just delete the WIN.COM file and reinstall W98 in no time.:D

Well I have finally installed the new drive and stuff, and my computer is running unbelievably fast compared to before

Was my first time partitioning so i got it wrong a lot, and eventually gave up and just did one massive partition rather than a seperate one for xp

i kept having the one without xp installed show up as 0 bytes

oh well fact is this thing works :D plus I now have 154gb of space to fill with porn downloads ;)
