Purchased Windows Vista Home Premium with intention to upgrade in place over
XP. After running Upgrade Advisor, removed the only software that needed to
be uninstalled and installed after the upgrade. Otherwise, PC was
Vista-ready. However, when I ran the upgrade from the desktop (NOT booted
from the DVD) and filled in the license number, the following screen did not
allow clicking on the upgrade in place option. I am trying to avoid the
major effort of rounding up myriads of serial numbers and configuration
settings for everything from Norton to Incredimail, exporting and
re-importing mail, etc., etc., just for the upgrade.

Can anyone shed light on why the upgrade option is not working in this
circumstance

In that case I would bet you had running the wrong XP version, or not
installed SP2 or wrong architecture ( 32 vs 64 bit)

INPLACE Upgrade is only offered from .. to .. :

XP PRO SP2 --> ULTIMATE & BUSINESS
XP HOME SP2 --> ULTIMATE / HOME BASIC / HOMEPREMIUM
XP MEDIA 2005 --> ULTIMATE & HOMEPREMIUM
XP TABLET SP2 --> ULTIMATE & BUSINESS

CPU architecture must be same, you cannot run x64 setup from within 32 bit
XP.

Also XP has to be genuine and activated..
