Not getting my storage space back upon deletion of big files !?

I've had some large video files that I recently deleted (shift+delete), but although the files appear gone, my total unused space has remained the same...and my disk is still full. Seems like this has happened before, but somewhere along the next few days the blank space magically appears. Am I doing something wrong? How can I get my blank storage space back immediately?

Thanks!

Are you running any sort of deletion protection software? For instance, the
"Protected Recycle Bin" that comes with Norton System Works... These type
of programs prevent Windows from seeing that the space is actually available
for a set (by the user) number of days to prevent the area from being
overwritten. After the set number of days is up, that area of the hard
drive is ounce again "opened" for writing. Basically it allows a margin or
error, in case you (or another piece of software) deletes a file
accidentally, and you find that you need to recover it.

In the above example, you would need to right-click the Recycle Bin and
choose "Empty Norton Protected Files". If you don't have this software, but
you some other piece of software, the option may be similar. In any case,
refer to the help files for whatever software it is you may have...

If the above doesn't apply to you, perhaps someone else may be able to help
you out with this...
